unexpected treasure

Behind our house, is the woods. And in the woods, are the trees. Lots and lots of trees. And smack dab in the middle of the trees, a swamp. Each summer, the swampy area contributes to a great civilization of mosquitos. Thus, we leave the woods alone once they arrive.  But in the spring and in the fall it's a great place for little boys to explore and play. As for the winter, it's typically out of bounds due to the deep deep snow that blankets the entire floor. EXCEPT FOR THIS YEAR..... This year....the woods has no snow in it. It still looks like fall in there. It's totally explorable.

And the swampy area? Now this is truly the unexpected treasure of winter 2012. It's one hugely ginormous, smooth sheet of ice.

I'm sure you can guess what the delight and highlight of every afternoon is when school is out...

Slip sliding around on the ice in the woods. Absolutely!

Some of the kids have been skating on it. I need to track down a pair of pond hockey skates for the Maxter so he can get out there skating as well - putting that on my to-do list for this week.

Great, huh? It kind of reminds me of when I was a kid and we'd skate on the (gravel) driveway after an icestorm. This is way better! :-)
